My name is Mrs. Barbara Cushing and
I am honored to be at SSA Middle School/High School. This will be my
third year at SSA Tucson. I am teaching 6th grade Earth Science, and
High School Advanced Placement Environmental Science.
I have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Statistics and
Computer Science, and a Master’s of Science degree in Education.
A little bit about
me: I am married, and have two children. My daughter lives in Atlanta
with her husband and two daughters, and my son is a sophmore majoring in
Physics at the University of Arizona. My husband is the software team
scientist/manager at Steward Observatory at the UofA, working on the Large Binocular Telescope
(the largest terrestrial telescope in the world).
I have been blessed in my academic and professional life, as my experiences range from the typical to the extraordinary! I have had the unique opportunity to work in several exciting fields --
as a soldier; a Mars Researcher at the US Geological Survey’s
Astrogeologic Division; a Computer Scientist for the US Navy; a Scientific Satellite Planner at the University
of Alaska; an Ice Researcher in the Antarctic on board an icebreaker
for the Geophysical Institute and National Science Foundation, and a
Space Science Educator with NASA’s Challenger Learning Center.
I
was selected to join the Arizona Center of STEM Teachers (ACST), as an
Associate Lead Teacher. (STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics.) Because of my work with ACST, I work at
Biosphere 2 as an educator. ACST spearheads teacher professional
development in the STEM fields, and puts on Fall and Spring short
courses, as well as a 2-week Summer Institute in residence -- living and
working at the Biosphere.
As you can probably tell, science is my passion, and I hope to instill that love of discovery in my students as well.
